Last week my little niece celebrated her 6th birthday. This year she’s really into unicorns, so of course that was the theme for her cake / this set up. I was really happy she picked this theme, because I couldn’t wait to give the unicorn cake a try. I’ve been seeing it everywhere, talk about setting a trend! I searched all over pinterest for different kinds/designs, but I thought it would be best to try and create my own. I used a cake box mix (only because I needed at least 3 or 4 layers). I baked the cake in a 7 inch round pan (1 box of cake mix made two cakes). For the actual cake, I stacked 3 high. Make sure you level your cakes, to get a nice even surface. Next, I frosted the middle and stacked them, then added a crumb coat and a coat over top. I didn’t worry too much about getting a perfect icing (unicorns are fluffy after all), but rather just a smooth surface to work with. The ears and horn were easy to shape with fondant, it’s like using play-doh. To make the horn pick the colours you want and roll into a longish piece (thinner at one end) and twist together. I dyed icing in 3 different colours for the hair, and piped rosettes along the top of the cake and then came down the font of the cake to look like the mane. *I found after icing part of the mane, it was a good idea to put the cake in the fridge so the icing wouldn’t fall.* For the eyes I used a black gel icing and kept it simple. This cake is really easy to make and decorate (I’m nowhere close to being a professional), but I am very happy with the way it turned out!
For this little set up, I included My Little Ponies of course. My niece received a bunch for her birthday, and they were perfect to scatter around the counter. The pretty paper plates, napkins, cutlery and HOORAY stickers, are from my friend’s online party decor store. She sells a number of wonderful party supplies, that are not only trendy, but stylish and cute! There are so many different themed items, as well as other pretty things!
